A Virtual Environment for Post-Stroke Motor Rehabilitation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Current post-stroke motor rehabilitation is unable to significantly benefit the majority of stroke survivors, and is insufficient for the minority who are able to participate. Two components that could stimulate more motor redevelopment are increased motivation during extended therapy sessions (extended practice) and a patient perceiving normal arm movement which they control (actionobservation). We are developing a 3D virtual environment that presents motivating rehabilitation tasks for patients to complete through movement of a virtual arm controlled by their own impaired arm. By creating a virtual environment that incorporates components not found in conventional therapy we hope to improve the extent survivors are able to recover normal arm movement after a stroke.

Effects of Task Related Training and Hand Dominance on Upper Limb Motor Function in Subjects with Stroke
Objetives: Recovery of upper limb motor function in stroke is limited. Different approaches are used to improve the upper limb function, but none has satisfactory results. The present study investigated the effect of task related training and role of hand dominance in upper limb motor function rehabilitation in stroke population. Methods: A convenient sample of 32 subjects divided into 4 gro...
متن کاملAn integrative virtual reality cognitive-motor intervention approach in stroke rehabilitation: a pilot study
Stroke is one of the most common causes of acquired disability, leaving numerous adults with cognitive and motor impairments, and affecting patient’s capability to live independently. In post-stroke it is imperative to initiate a process of intensive rehabilitation and personalized objectives to maximize functional cognitive and motor recovery. Virtual Reality (VR) technology is being widely ap...
متن کاملNeuroplasticity and neuromotor synergies in context of rehabilitation after stroke: a systematic review
Background: Alterations of neuroplasticity and cortical excitability are important pathophysiological factors in stroke. Modulation of the neuroplasticity has been proposed as an underlying mechanism of recovery in different neurological disorders. But it is not still clear how the CNS faces the complexity of muscle control. Neuroplastic processes may be used for the functional improvement of s...

Current understanding of brain plasticity has lead to new approaches in ischemic stroke rehabilitation. Stroke units that combine good medical and nursing care with task-oriented intense training in an environment that provides confidence, stimulation and motivation significantly improve outcome. Repetitive trans-cranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and trans-cranial direct current stimulation ...
متن کاملNon-immersive Virtual Reality for Fine Motor Rehabilitation of Functional Activities in Individuals with Chronic Stroke: A Review
More than two thirds of the individuals who have strokes are over the age of 65. Therefore, as the global population continues to age, the risk of stroke is expected to increase substantially. Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging therapy that holds promise for the rehabilitation of patients with chronic stroke conditions. VR is an interactive, computer-based simulation of real life tasks, occurr...
